Monterey County Jail Mugshots
The official Monterey County Sheriff's public In Custody Log does not display booking photos in the visible table or in the CSV-backed roster. The public fields are BOOKING, NAME, DATEOF, SEX, AGE, HOUSING, AGENCY, and CHARGES. No mugshot field, image link, or clickable public profile was located in the official roster interface. That makes Monterey County different from jurisdictions that publish photo-based booking profiles or recent-arrest galleries.
The Sheriff's Office still uses digital imaging during intake at Monterey County Jail, and Sheriff Tina M. Nieto's agency maintains booking records through the Sheriff's Records Division. The key point is access method. The text roster can help identify the person and booking number, but a booking photo is not posted in the public roster. Current custody details belong with Monterey County jail inmate records, while filed charges and case outcomes belong with Monterey County court records after jail arrest.
Monterey County Roster Photo Limits
The Monterey County Sheriff's In Custody Log is best understood as a current custody table, not a historical mugshot gallery. It is free, does not require login, and is embedded through an official sheriff page. The vendor-hosted table is generated from a public CSV source and uses searchable, sortable DataTables controls. The roster may show same-day bookings, but the timestamp endpoint is the only known update indicator, so it should not be described as fully real time.
Because the roster does not open individual profile pages, there is no public place in that interface to click through to a booking photograph, full physical description, date of birth, case number, court date, release date, or narrative probable-cause facts. A person can be present in the log because of an arrest by Salinas PD, Monterey County SO, Monterey PD, Seaside PD, Marina PD, Probation, Parole, Superior Court, or another holding authority. That does not mean a photo is public online.

The screenshot is useful because the official route starts with custody lookup, even when the final goal is a booking-photo request.
Monterey County Booking Fields

Request Monterey County Booking Photos
A factual booking-photo search starts with the official roster and then moves to records. The goal is to give MCSO enough information to identify the booking image without asking for a broad or unclear search. No official public mugshot gallery or official roster-retention period was located for Monterey County. Historical booking information should be routed to Records rather than treated as a roster feature.
- Open the MCSO In Custody Log and search the current roster by name or visible table controls.
- Record the booking number, full roster name, DATEOF value, age, agency, and charges shown for the row.
- If the person is no longer listed, use the known booking date, arresting agency, and approximate age to help Records identify the booking.
- Submit a focused request through the Sheriff NextRequest public-records portal or the Sheriff's Release of Information Request path.
- Ask for the booking photograph tied to a specific person, booking number, booking date, and arresting or holding agency.
- Expect review, redaction, denial, or limited release if an exemption, safety issue, investigation issue, juvenile restriction, or sealing order applies.
MCSO states that the Records Division is the repository, retrieval, and records-management center for all booking records for Monterey County. It also says release of booking records is limited. That language should guide expectations: a booking photo may be requested, but Monterey County does not promise online photo display or automatic public release.
Monterey County Records Requests
The Sheriff's Records Division is the local source for booking records, incident reports from unincorporated areas, warrant records, Good Conduct letters, and other law-enforcement record services. The division accepts individual requests by mail or fax, but MCSO instructions say records must be picked up in person. Monterey County Booking Photo Law
California law makes specified arrest and booking information public, but it does not require Monterey County to post booking photos on the jail roster. Government Code section 7923.610 requires law-enforcement agencies to disclose certain arrest and booking information unless disclosure would endanger safety or an investigation. Listed categories include name, occupation, physical description, arrest and booking times, location and circumstances of arrest, bail, custody or release location, charges, holds, and warrants. Monterey County Public Photo Limits

If a record is restricted, MCSO may withhold or redact it. Reasons can include an active investigation, safety concerns, juvenile status, victim privacy, sealed court action, or another exemption. The county's lack of an online photo gallery is not the same as proof that no booking photo exists.
How Long Monterey County Photos Stay Public
No official Monterey County roster retention period for mugshots was located, and no official public booking-photo gallery was found in the sources reviewed. The current in-custody log should therefore be treated as a current custody list only. Once a person is released, transferred, or no longer listed, the public roster may no longer help. A later search should move to MCSO Records, the NextRequest portal, or court records if the goal is filed charges rather than custody confirmation.
The same caution applies to timing. A person may appear on the jail roster before a court case appears in the Monterey Superior Court portal. A person may also leave the roster through bail, own-recognizance release, supervised release, transfer, or a decision not to file within the required time. Photo access, if any, follows the record request and exemption review, not the public roster's display window.
Monterey County Mugshot Removal
No official Monterey County policy was located that promises automatic removal of a booking photo after dismissal, acquittal, or sealing. For official records, use the court and statutory record-clearing routes rather than any commercial removal process. California Penal Code section 851.8 addresses factual-innocence petitions to seal and later destroy qualifying arrest records. Penal Code section 1203.4 allows certain defendants to withdraw a plea or set aside a verdict and have accusations dismissed after probation or other qualifying criteria.
Those statutes do not mean every public reference disappears from every agency system. A court order may affect public access, but law-enforcement, court, licensing, immigration, or future-case uses can still have special rules. If the booking photo request relates to a dismissed or sealed matter, include the case number and order details when contacting Records or the court clerk.
Monterey County State and Federal Photos
Monterey County contains state correctional facilities in the Soledad area, including Correctional Training Facility, Salinas Valley State Prison, and Gabilan Conservation Camp #38, but those are not county jail booking facilities. Sentenced state prisoners are searched through the CDCR CIRIS locator, not the Monterey County jail roster. A county booking number does not become a CDCR number after transfer.
Federal and immigration custody are separate again. The Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator does not operate as a public mugshot database, and no official BOP institution was located inside Monterey County.
