Monterey County Jail Overview

Monterey County Jail is operated by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office through the Corrections Operations Bureau. Sheriff Tina M. Nieto leads the Sheriff's Office, while jail operations handle intake, housing, classification, release, medical areas, commissary, laundry, kitchen, chapel, library, and the public-facing custody process. The jail complex sits on the Natividad Road public-safety campus in Salinas. The jail is a county facility, not a CDCR prison. Adults arrested by Salinas, Monterey, Seaside, Marina, Greenfield, Pacific Grove, Sand City, the California Highway Patrol, the Sheriff's Office, and other local agencies may appear in the Monterey County Jail roster after booking. The jail also holds people for Superior Court, probation, parole, and lawful holds. If a person has been sentenced to state prison and transferred from county custody, the county booking number will not work as a CDCR number, and the search must move to the statewide CIRIS system.

Monterey County Jail Population

Monterey County Jail has a layered capacity history. A CEQAnet record for the jail housing addition described a 576-bed expansion that raised rated capacity from 825 beds to 1,401 beds. Later county population reports use the expanded capacity context. The Sheriff's public jail page also says the jail houses about 1,100 incarcerated persons in 31 housing units, with housing ranging from single cells to open dormitories. County realignment data show lower recent average daily population, so the best reading is that operating counts and dated reports must be kept separate.

For FY 2024-25, Monterey County Public Safety Realignment reporting showed about 818 average monthly jail ADP. A July through December 2025 CCP quarterly report showed a more recent 782 average. Those figures are county jail counts, not a count of the large state-prison population housed elsewhere in Monterey County. During July through December 2025, the county report listed a gender split of 90 percent male and 10 percent female. It also showed the jail population was well below the expanded 1,401-bed rated capacity, even though past overcrowding and Hernandez litigation remain part of the jail's recent history.

Current Monterey County Jail custody is searched through the Sheriff's In Custody Log. The public log is free and does not require an account. It is a current custody table, not a full booking archive. The log displays a searchable table with booking number, name, booking date, sex, age, housing, arresting or holding agency, and charges. It does not open a separate profile page, and it does not show mugshots, date of birth, full physical description, court date, release date, judge, or narrative probable-cause facts.

The roster should be treated as a snapshot of county jail custody. A person can be missing because booking has not finished, release has already occurred, a name is spelled differently, a city police agency has not yet transferred the person, or the person has moved to CDCR, BOP, or ICE custody. 2. Use the table search box for a last name, first name, booking number, agency, housing code, or charge term.
3. Compare age, sex, agency, booking date, housing, and booking number when names are similar.
4. Read the charges as booking or holding charges, then confirm court filings through Monterey Superior Court if needed.

Monterey County Jail Contact

Most public jail questions start with the jail line, while booking-record and incident-report questions route to the Sheriff's Records Division. MCSO states that its Records Division is the repository and retrieval center for Monterey County booking records and Sheriff's incident reports. Release of booking records is limited, and some requests may need the public-records portal or a Release of Information Request rather than the roster table.

Monterey County Jail Visits

Monterey County Jail visiting is a local jail process, not a CDCR prison visit. Visitors should confirm eligibility and current availability before traveling because housing status, no-contact orders, discipline, security conditions, and visitor rules can change. The Sheriff's public rules include strict limits on electronics, contraband, dress, medical items, religious clothing inspection, service animals, infant items, and visitor conduct. A secured visiting room allows one child and one adult at a time, with no switching during the visit.

Video visitation uses SmartInmate. A visitor registers, connects to the incarcerated person, and submits a video visit application. In-person visits require valid identification and compliance with jail rules. Parolees need written permission from a parole agent. Convicted felons must complete the Penal Code 4571 form and receive Facility Commander approval before visiting.

Monterey County Jail Mail

Monterey County Jail personal mail changed on December 4, 2024. Regular postal mail, including postcards, letters, and greeting cards, must go to Smart Communications for scanning. The jail says personal mail sent to the facility after that date is returned to sender. The envelope or postcard must clearly include the incarcerated person's name and booking number, so the booking number should be taken from the In Custody Log before anything is mailed.

Books, magazines, government mail, and legal mail do not follow the same scanned-mail address. Books and magazines go to the Natividad Road jail address with name and booking number. Government agency mail also goes to 1410 Natividad Road. Attorneys register through SmartInmate for legal mail with government ID and bar card, and emergency legal mail questions go to 831-755-3782.

Monterey County Jail Intake

Booking at Monterey County Jail is the custody-entry process after arrest, court remand, or transfer. The Sheriff's Jail Operations Division describes intake, housing, release, and classification as local jail functions. During intake, staff identify the person, process property, perform search and safety steps, conduct medical and mental-health screening where needed, and classify the person for a housing area. The public roster may lag behind real-time custody because a person has to move through this process before a row appears.

Property has its own release process. To request a property release, call 831-755-3782 and leave a detailed message. The Sheriff's instructions say a response should come within 48 hours. Pickup occurs at the jail lobby Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and property must be picked up on the day of initiation by 10:00 p.m. Requests must be completed within 30 days of intake unless the incarcerated person has been formally sentenced to CDCR.

Monterey County Jail Programs

Program access at Monterey County Jail depends on custody status. The Sheriff's Jail Operations Division says sentenced incarcerated persons may live in open dormitories and work on in-facility crews, including kitchen, cleaning, maintenance, groundskeeping, and litter pickup. Unsentenced incarcerated persons are held in secured housing and do not participate in work crews. Sentenced people may have access to educational and vocational classes, religious services, library services, and drug and alcohol programs. MCSO reports more than 250 volunteers support the jail population.

Recent reform context is also part of the facility record. Monterey County Jail has been central to Hernandez litigation over jail medical, mental-health, dental care, safety, and disability-access issues. In November 2025, MCSO announced Correctional Healthcare Partners Monterey, Inc. as the new correctional healthcare provider. County board materials describe a contract running January 1, 2026 through June 30, 2031 for medical, dental, psychiatric, and Jail-Based Competency Treatment services. That does not change how the roster is searched, but it is important facility context for people tracking conditions and custody services.
